Product Description
Fumed silica (CAS numbers 7631-86-9 or 112945-52-5), also known as pyrogenic silica, is an amorphous, ultrafine silica powder produced by the high-temperature hydrolysis of chlorosilane in a hydrogen-oxygen flame. It is a porous functional additive with a high specific surface area ranging from 50 to 600 m²/g, widely used in various industrial applications.
The production of fumed silica uses silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4), hydrogen (H2), and oxygen (O2) as raw materials, undergoing hydrolysis and oxidation reactions in a high-temperature flame to produce amorphous silica particles.
Initially, the flame reaction generates Primary Particles with a diameter of 5–50 nanometers, which are non-porous, independently distributed, and serve as the fundamental units of silica. Subsequently, these primary particles aggregate through chemical bonding to form Aggregates measuring 100–500 nanometers, featuring a tighter structure and a branched morphology. Finally, these aggregates further cluster through physical interactions to form Agglomerates ranging from 1–200 micrometers, appearing as loose large particle groups.
Thickening and Viscosity Improvement
When HJSIL is added to a system, it significantly enhances the viscosity, helping the product reach a specific thickness to ensure performance, while typically not altering other properties of the system. In coatings and adhesives, thickening can prevent material sagging or dripping during application.
HJSIL 200 has excellent thixotropic properties, which are especially useful in applications that require easy operation during use (where viscosity decreases under shear, making it easy to apply) but need to maintain stability after standing (where viscosity increases, preventing sagging). For example, in coatings and gels, thixotropy prevents dripping or sagging during application while allowing smooth application and uniform coverage.
Reinforcement
Incorporating HJSIL as a filler material enhances several mechanical properties of elastomers, such as modulus, elongation at break, tensile strength, and tear resistance. Additionally, the large specific surface area of HJSIL contributes to achieving superior transparency in elastomers.
Anti-caking- Enhanced flow performance:
HJSIL, with its unique property of acting like ball bearings, effectively prevents lumping and clogging. It enhances the storage stability of powders that are highly susceptible to caking. Additionally, HJSIL improves flowability, addressing and preventing potential flow issues.
Anti-settling
HJSIL fumed silica plays a crucial role in coatings, inks, and adhesives by preventing solid particles, pigments, or fillers from settling under the influence of gravity. This ensures consistent uniformity and stability during both storage and application. By enhancing suspension properties, HJSIL significantly improves the performance of liquid systems, including pigmented coatings and resin-based formulations with fillers.
Hydrophilic fumed silica is a highly versatile material with numerous applications thanks to its distinctive properties, such as a large surface area, low density, and water-repellent capabilities. Below are some of its key uses:
Silicone Sealants and Adhesives
Hydrophilic fumed silica is commonly used in silicone sealants and adhesives to enhance rheological properties, providing thixotropy (the ability to thicken and retain shape) and preventing sagging of the material.
Paints and Coatings
It is incorporated into paints and coatings to improve water-repellent characteristics. Hydrophilic fumed silica enhances the durability and weather resistance of exterior paints, especially in environments exposed to moisture.
Cosmetics and Personal Care Products
In cosmetics, fumed silica functions as a thickening agent in products like anti-perspirants, deodorants, and moisturizers. Its hydrophilic properties help manage texture and prevent clumping in moisture-exposed products.
Gel and lithium-ion Batteries
HJSIL fumed silica contributes to various aspects of battery performance, including stability, conductivity, safety, and thermal management, making it an important component in the development of advanced battery technologies.
Food and Pharmaceuticals
Used as an anti-caking agent in powdered food products, hydrophilic fumed silica ensures powders remain free-flowing. It is also employed in pharmaceuticals to prevent clumping of powdered medications.
Lubricants
Hydrophilic fumed silica improves the viscosity and stability of lubricants, making them more effective in extreme conditions such as high temperatures or exposure to moisture.
Oil and Gas Industry
Hydrophilic fumed silica serves as a thickener in drilling fluids and other formulations in the oil and gas industry, where water resistance is essential.
