Product Description
Hydrophobic fumed silica is a form of silicon dioxide (commonly known as silica) that has hydrophobic groups chemically bonded to the surface. It’s after-treated fumed silica or surface-modified fumed silica. HJSIL hydrophobic fumed silica is after treated with the agents like HMDS, PDMS, DDS.
"DDS treatment" for fumed silica refers to a process where a chemical compound called dimethyldichlorosilane (DDS) is applied to the surface of fumed silica particles, transforming them from hydrophilic (water-loving) to hydrophobic (water-repelling) by creating a silane coating; essentially making the fumed silica more compatible with non-polar liquids like oils and organic solvents.
Thickening and thixotropy: The use of HJSIL effectively combines thickening and thixotropic properties. By incorporating appropriate thickening and thixotropic agents, HJSIL achieves high viscosity (static stability) while maintaining excellent flowability (shear-thinning performance), meeting the diverse requirements of storage and application. In coatings, HJSIL prevents pigment settling during storage and ensures easy brushing or spraying during application, while maintaining strong anti-sagging performance.
Reinforcement: Adding HJSIL as a filler material improves various mechanical properties of elastomers, including modulus, elongation at break, tensile strength and tear resistance. HJSIL’s large specific surface area also makes it possible to achieve excellent transparency in elastomers.
Anti-caking, effects for improved flow characteristics: Due to a property that makes it behave like ball bearings, HJSIL resists lumping and clogging. It can be used to improve the storage stability of powders that are especially prone to caking. HJSIL can also be used to improve flow characteristics and prevent flow problems
Anti-settling: The usage of HJSIL fumed silica in coatings, inks, and adhesives effectively prevents solid particles, pigments, or fillers from settling to the bottom due to gravity, ensuring uniformity and stability during storage and use. HJSIL improves the suspension behavior in liquid systems, such as pigmented coatings or resins containing fillers.
Anti-sagging: The addition of HJSIL R272 in coatings and adhesives can prevent sagging, dripping, or running when applied on vertical surfaces.
Thermal Insulation: With its very low solid state conductivity and vast spacing between particles, HJSIL provides excellent hydrophobic properties and better thermal insulation performance.
Hydrophobic fumed silica is a versatile material with various applications due to its unique properties, such as high surface area, low density, and the ability to repel water. Here are some of the key applications:
Silicone Sealants and Adhesives: Hydrophobic fumed silica is widely used in the formulation of silicone sealants and adhesives. It helps to improve the rheological properties, providing thixotropy (ability to thicken and maintain shape) and preventing the material from sagging.
Paints and Coatings: It is added to paints and coatings to enhance their water-repellent properties. Hydrophobic fumed silica helps improve the durability and weather resistance of exterior paints, particularly in environments exposed to moisture.
Cosmetics and Personal Care Products: Fumed silica is used in cosmetics as a thickening agent and in products like anti-perspirants, deodorants, and moisturizers. The hydrophobic nature helps control the texture and prevent clumping in products exposed to moisture.
Plastics and Polymers: It is incorporated into plastics and polymers to improve their processing characteristics and to increase hydrophobicity. This helps reduce water absorption and improve the overall durability of the material.
Food and Pharmaceuticals: Hydrophobic fumed silica is used as an anti-caking agent in powdered food products, ensuring the powder remains free-flowing. It's also used in pharmaceuticals to prevent clumping of powdered drugs.
Lubricants: Hydrophobic fumed silica is utilized in lubricants to improve viscosity and stability, particularly in extreme conditions like high temperatures or when exposed to moisture.
Electronics: It is used in the electronics industry for applications requiring moisture resistance, such as in encapsulants for electronic components and devices.
Oil and Gas Industry: Hydrophobic fumed silica is used as a thickener in drilling fluids and other formulations, where water resistance is crucial.
