Product Description

Characteristics

HMMAT® 205 Matting agents are high performance silica developed for a variety of applications in Paint & Coating.

What is Matting Agent?

Matting agent is an additive that reduces the gloss of coatings, inks, or plastics. It usually exists in the form of fine particles, with its main component being amorphous silica (silica gel). HMMAT matting agent works by modifying the surface structure of the coating film, causing light to scatter on the surface. This reduces the intensity of reflected light, achieving a matte effect.

Working Mechanism of Matting Agents

The working principle of matting agents is as follows: In coatings, matting agent particles are evenly distributed within the wet coating layer. As the solvent evaporates, the coating film thickness decreases, causing the layer to shrink. The matting agent particles become exposed on the surface, forming tiny uneven structures. These structures scatter light, reducing the gloss of the coating and creating a matte effect. This uneven structures enhances light scattering, effectively lowering the surface gloss. This technology is commonly used in coatings that require a matte finish, such as furniture paints and industrial coatings.

Features of HMMAT 205 matting agent

Gloss Reduction: Matting agents are evenly distributed in coatings or inks, forming microscopic uneven surfaces that scatter light effectively, reducing surface gloss.

Particle Control: The matting effect depends on the size, shape, and distribution of particles. Small particles are suitable for high-transparency coatings, while larger particles are ideal for achieving stronger matting effects.

Chemical Stability: Matting agents have high chemical purity, making them insoluble in water, common solvents, and general acids and bases, ensuring excellent chemical inertness and stability.

Excellent Dispersibility: Matting agents disperse well in various substrates, facilitating the production process of coatings. They are produced using precipitation and gel methods to ensure stable product quality.

High Performance: Matting agents offer high transparency and strong matting effects, along with excellent dispersibility and suspension. Even at low addition levels, they achieve significant matting performance and are compatible with various coating resin systems.

Applications of HMMAT 205 matting agent

Wood coatings

Make wood furniture more matte and durable: Enhance the surface texture of wood furniture with advanced matting agent technology, achieving a more natural matte finish. At the same time, improve surface wear resistance and scratch resistance, extending its lifespan.

General industrial coatings

Improve the durability and matte effect of wind turbine blades: Specialized matting agent formulations provide superior surface matte effects for wind turbine blades, reducing light reflection while enhancing wear resistance and weathering capabilities.

Inks

Matting agents for inks are designed to provide high transparency, enhancing the vividness and brightness of ink colors. These matting agents are versatile, making them suitable for both gravure and screen printing techniques, and they are compatible with a wide range of systems, including water-based and solvent-based formulations.

coil coatings

Improve the matte effect and wear resistance of coil coatings: Utilize professional matting technology to significantly reduce the gloss of coated surfaces, enhancing scratch resistance and durability, delivering excellent performance in industrial applications.

HMMAT matting agent FAQ

1. HMMAT Matting Agent Classification by Production Method

Precipitated Silica - HMMAT P607 / P600
Produced through chemical reactions, with controllable particle size and shape. Precipitated silica matting agents offer excellent dispersibility and stability, making them suitable for a wide range of coating systems.

Gel Silica- HMMAT 205 / 562 / 207
Manufactured using the sol-gel process, resulting in finer particle structures and higher transparency. It is particularly well-suited for high-performance transparent coatings and matte applications.

2. Classification by Treatment

Non-Wax Treated Matting Agents - HMMAT 101 / 106
Provide exceptional transparency and matting performance, ideal for clear coatings or high-gloss varnishes requiring high transparency and low gloss.

Wax-Treated Matting Agents - 20 series / 5 series
Surface treated with special wax for enhanced anti-settling properties and a smoother surface finish, without compromising the transparency and whiteness of the coating film.

3. HMMAT Matting Agents for Water-based, Solvent-based, and UV Systems

Most HMMAT grades compatible

Solvent-based Matting Powder: Solvent-based matting powders are often used in traditional paints and inks. They have better solubility and uniform dispersion properties, suitable for solvent-based coating systems, and can control surface gloss to achieve the desired matte effect.

HMMAT B23W / B262

Water-based Matting Powder: Mainly used in water-based coatings, it effectively reduces the gloss of the surface while maintaining good film performance. Water-based matting powders typically have finer particles and good stability, making them suitable for products with high environmental requirements.

HMMAT 700 / 708 / 709

UV Matting Powder: UV matting powders are used in ultraviolet (UV) curing coatings. They cure quickly under UV light while reducing surface gloss. These powders perform excellently in UV curing systems and offer better weather resistance.
